On December 4, 2017, President Trump signed a proclamation drastically reducing the size and, therefore, the protections for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument ("GSENM"). As of that date, the GSENM created by President Clinton ceased to exist. The new Trump version consists of three new 'units' with a total area significantly smaller than the previous monument. Even though several legal challenges were filed the same day, the BLM ("Bureau of Land Management") immediately began managing the new units according to the Trump Proclamation.
Protect These Lands
As the human population continues to grow, wilderness areas are rapidly disappearing or being severely impacted. Sea ice and the polar glaciers are melting causing sea levels to rise.
We believe these natural land and sea areas need to be protected and preserved through a variety of means such as:
- Raising awareness and educating people on the issues and the scientific consensus of how to address them
- Strengthening protections of wilderness areas already in the park/monument system
- Raising funds to magnify the impact of efforts from other conservation groups
